It’s been nearly a year since I’ve been able to fish my favorite Wright county lakes. This time we hit a lake known only to a select few as the ‘cheater’ lake. My underboss and I were able to locate bunches of bass, and surprisingly, they weren’t off-shore. In fact many of the bass came in 3-4 FOW. With midday temps in the 90′s, a good wind, sunny skies and water temps that hit 80, it was somewhat surprising there weren’t many pleasure boaters and jet skiis out. Which I am totally fine with. We boated many bass in the 17-19 inch range, hoping all day for that 20+ inch fish that never came.
While we boated and released over 40 bass, we missed many, many more. It was bittersweet – catching good quality bass but missing many bites. There were far too many times when the bass would nip at the bait then never come back. And if someone can explain to me how a guy does not set the hook into a bass that holds on to your frickin’ bait for so long that the bass makes a jump or two and then disappears, I would appreciate it. The hook points were still buried in the bait after the bass let go, indicating that all my grunts trying to set the hook were for naught. Apparently I am getting weak in my old age. But I will keep trying.
