Mr. Fishwrench, I can get bass to hit a buzzbait but when I set the hook it usually just flies toward me narrowly missing my face, sans fish. What’s my problem?

    • Do you want to know what your problem is, or do you want to know how to catch fish? I’ll assume the latter, because server space is limited.

Generally, a bass will gobble up a buzzbait like a hormonal teenager on brownies. Strikes can, however, end up short for a number of reasons. Without knowing your specific set-up, here are some things to…[Read more]

Did you recently fix the home page or am I having troubles on my work PC?? I haven’t been able to view the home page for a couple weeks at work but I can get in to the forums no problems. I saw the updates on my phone so thought I would check here from [...]

    • Finally, a question! I was getting tired of pushing papers for this so called website, Fishwrench.com. I can’t believe I have my name tied to this garbage. Who’s the web developer anyway?! I have some firing to do.

Regarding your question, @buckshot, no, there haven’t been changes to the home page. You should still be able to get to it…[Read more]

  • Dear Mr. Fishwrench, Some time ago I paid $15 for Al Lindner polarized glasses. Well, they sucked… or at least I couldn’t tell the real difference when I put them on in terms of helping to see in to the water. Can you help a guy out and recommend a pair of good glasses? Signed, [...]

    • Desperate and confused… you were off to a good start by getting polarized sunglasses, but most fishermen overlook lens quality. Glasses made of glass have less distortion that your everyday Wal-Mart special plastic lenses. Imagine, if you will, looking out your window made of glass. The view is pretty darn clear. Now cover that same window…[Read more]

      • Wise Mr. Wrench,

I get the spend more money aspect… but are all better than plastic glasses the same? What recommendations do you and the FW Crew have in terms of brands (probably need to post on a different section than Ask Mr. FW for others)?

    • Wiley X; it’s all I use. Wiley X has a comfortable fit, and a great lens. The view is so clear, you can almost see underneath the bottom of the like. OK, so that’ s a lie, but they are really good sunglasses. Wiley X can be found at Tackle Warehouse…[Read more]

Mr Fishwrench – What do you do if you’re in a new State bored out of your mind in the winter with no one to hang out with and no where to ice fish because the ice is gone?

Thanks for the great web site.

    Confused In Michigan…

    • Confused, there’s never a need for boredom. Got spuds? How about PVC? Any chance your significant other won’t miss a can of hairspray? Well, by golly, you’ve got all the tools you need to make a spud gun! That’s right – a spud gun.

Using 1.5″ PVC as a barrel, some wider PVC for a propellent chamber, an end cap, and a Coleman “clicker”…[Read more]

So the last /8 of the IPV4 has been assigned. Will we all be converting over to the 128bit under-supported IPv6 or do you think the estimated 86% of assigned but unused 32 bit IPs will simply be released back into the wild to extend the life of the 4.3 billion ips available in the ipv4 standard?

    • Chris – thanks so much for the question.

When face with this sort of question, I reach for my Ardent Reel! With Ardent, I can rule the water. They’ve never let me down.

Oh, and the internet as we know it is dead. Goodbye 32 bit IPs.

    Question………………….
Let’s say you are fishing a lake with shallow weeds that are very thick with very stringy leaves and you know the bass are in there but it is too thick to fish cranks or anything for that matter with exposed hooks…you also know the fish are targeting minnow baits that look like shiners because you can coax an…[Read more]

    • you’ve got a couple of different choices in front of you depending upon the weed make-up. This is the order I would try these various techniques, assuming extra thick weeds.

Throw a weightless deadstick – fluke, creature bait, lizard – all good choices. Just put one texas style on a plain hook and let it slowly sink through the weeds. The bass…[Read more]

Dear Mr. Fishwrench, Do you think it would be tacky to solicit and or promote a sponsor for a wedding? Of course Mr Fishwrench is aware of the outrageous prices people charge. I understand this is a special day but……..I could see myself wearing a Tux with an advertisement on it. Heck the wedding party could pose for picture advertisements.…[Read more]

    • Opinion Seeker – sponsorship of weddings? That’s like sponsoring terrorists! No man right in the head should be taking a walk down an aisle of any sort – wedding or otherwise. Trying to cope and live with someone of the opposite sex is like trying to drive an over-tight, aero-pushing racecar at Darlington. Someone’s going to end up in the wall,…[Read more]
