Not too many styles of bass fishing can bring as much thrill or excitement as throwing a topwater lure toward a shoreline and having a bass come up from nowhere, break the water with a thrash and splash, and double your medium-heavy rod over like you were fishing with a twig. You're in a fight from the moment a bass hits until it comes to the boat. Topwater lures seem to attract the most aggressive and fierce of fish. About the only downfall of using topwaters is the bite can sometimes be slow - nothing like tossing a soft plastic out into cover. Another problem might be a topwater's tenacity for getting hung-up in thick cover. Dangling treble hooks, props, and spinners all are magnets for persistent weeds glomming onto your lure. Recently, solutions to both of these problems have been found with one hunk of tackle- the Mr. Twister Tri-Alive Top Prop Buzzbaits. It's a mouthful, but the name has to describe a lot of features found in only a single lure.
Several different fish enticing actions, multiple retrieve styles, and virtually weedless, the Mr. Twister Tri-Alive may be the favorite lure in my tackle box. Unlike traditional buzzbaits, the Tri-Alive Prop Buzzbait floats, so there's no need to work it fast to the surface. From the moment it hits the water, it's ready to be put to work. The prop design of the Tri-Alive makes a huge wake through the water and a sweet glub sound found in the most effective of topwater lures. Trailing behind the huge prop of this fantastic lure gem is a weighted 5/0 ½ oz hook with a built-in worm keeper. Included with every lure is a 4" split double-tail plastic, providing the ultimate action. When at rest, the weighted hook dips down into the water, exposing the dangling legs of the plastic trailer - an irresistible morsel for hungry fish. Using the attached worm keeper makes this lure weedless, so it can be paused and retrieved from the thickest of cover. Throw it over mats of milfoil, through lily pads, or into brush, and never give worry to being hung-up. Being a floater, and weedless, this lure can be brought back to the boat with a stop-and-go or steady retrieve. I like to let it sit where it hit the water for a while to scope out any prowling bass in the area. Then I move it over cover, until I find some sort of hole, pocket, or break. Then I'll pause the lure there - that's when a fish is most likely to hit. Once past the cover, I change to a steady retrieve with intermittent pauses, giving a stalking fish a chance to pound the Tri-Alive. That's the way I fish it, but there really is no wrong way to do it - fast, slow, steady or erratic - its versatility and action lets you do it all with success.
"That all sounds good, Bob, but does it work?"
You bet! First and foremost, Fishwrench.com won't peddle a lure if one of our staff members hasn't tried it. Our lure choices aren't made by sponsorship dollars - they're made on the effectiveness of the lure and sound judgment. In short, a lure can't be a Fishwrench lure unless one of us likes it and uses it. The Tri-Alive is one of my new favorites, and that's why it's the first featured lure on Fishwrench.com. A recent outing on a swampy, milfoil-riddled lake was producing few fish - nothing was biting. I couldn't even con a bass into hitting a Carolina rigged centipede - they were shut down, and had no interest in biting anything. Finally, I pulled the Tri-Alive Prop Buzzbait out of my tackle box. Within a couple of casts, the lure had its first thrashing. The thrashing continued throughout the day, drumming up bass out of the thickest of weed beds. Moving over to some lily pads, the lure never slowed down. I was surprised to see how far from the bottom fish would come to hit this thing. Of course, I shouldn't have been surprised with all the different actions this lure has to offer. I can't wait for my next chance to toss a topwater, so I can try this thing again.
